El Jardín
MapsUrbe Collective
Anthropologist Carlos Munizaga, an important promoter of the discipline in Chile, photographed Mapuche women and men in the Quinta Normal between 1959 and 1961. His research sought to understand what he called ‘the transitional structures in the migration of Araucanians’, but of course, both the ‘researched’ and the place where he carried out his ethnographic work were erased in an attempt at scientific neutrality. The Mapuche names were only given as initials, and the Quinta Normal was called ‘El Jardín’. Today, despite this erasure, these bodies and this area of the city make up a fundamental part of the memory of the children and grandchildren of this migration.
